Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE LAKE HOUSE WAS BROKEN INTO

The break-in happened on a Thursday.

A security alarm sounded at Bellweather Lake shortly after midnight.

I was asleep when the monitoring company called.

By the time police arrived, someone had forced a side window.

Several drawers had been opened.

A cabinet in my grandmother's study had been damaged.

But the intruder fled before taking anything valuable.

At least, anything obviously valuable.

The next morning, Rebecca and I drove to the house.

The kitchen smelled of cold wood and lake air.

I stood beside the broken window.

My stomach tightened.

Rebecca touched my arm.

“Are you okay?”

I nodded.

Then looked toward the study.

The filing cabinet had been opened.

Inside were old correspondence files.

Trust documents.

And family photographs.

Someone had been searching for something.

Not jewelry.

Not electronics.

Documents.

I called Margaret.

“We need to secure everything.”
