Chapter 4 - SIXTY-THREE WITNESSES

Back at Halston House, I handed Evan the envelope.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
Inside were copies of the proposed financial agreements.
And a formal notice that I would not execute them.
He looked up.
“Claire.”
I smiled.
“Yes?”
“Where did you get these?”
“From my attorney.”
His jaw tightened.
“This is private.”
I looked around the ballroom.
“Really?”
Sixty-three people watched us.
Paige stood beneath the chandelier wearing my grandmother's veil.
Caroline still held the lace.
I looked at Evan.
“You made my grandmother's wedding veil part of tonight's entertainment.”
His face hardened.
“Don't do this.”
I took a breath.
“Then you should have thought about that before planning to transfer control of my family's assets into a company you could influence.”
A gasp moved through the room.
Paige's face went pale.
Evan stared.
“That's ridiculous.”
I looked at him.
“Is it?”
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
I continued.
“Would you like me to explain what happened at Bellweather Lake three weeks ago?”
Paige stepped backward.
May you like
And that was when I knew.
They had no idea how much evidence I possessed.
