Chapter 3 - THE MARRIAGE VEHICLE

My attorney, Margaret Ellis, was not easily surprised.

She had represented the Whitmore Cultural Trust for fifteen years.

She knew every property.

Every board member.

Every clause in my grandmother's estate documents.

But when I showed her the recording, she went very still.

“Claire.”

I waited.

“Have you signed anything Evan prepared?”

“No.”

“Anything connected to a marital investment vehicle?”

“No.”

She exhaled.

“Good.”

I leaned forward.

“What exactly is he planning?”

Margaret opened a folder.

“The documents he sent over last month would create a jointly controlled holding company.”

I frowned.

“He said it was for tax planning.”

Margaret nodded.

“That was the explanation.”

“And the truth?”

She looked at me.

“If you signed the proposed agreements, you could transfer substantial voting influence over assets you currently control independently.”

My stomach tightened.

“Could he take the lake house?”

“Not directly. The trust owns it. But the proposed arrangements could give him influence over decisions involving the trust and its affiliated entities.”

I stared.

Margaret continued.

“The documents contain provisions I would never recommend you sign.”

I looked toward the window.

For four years, Evan had told me he loved the lake house because it was important to me.

Now I wondered whether he'd ever loved anything about me that couldn't be transferred into his name.
