I didn't play the recording.
Not that night.
I had already given copies to my attorney.
The original was preserved.
I didn't need to turn my grandmother's ballroom into a courtroom.
I simply looked at Evan.
“The wedding is canceled.”
His face changed.
“Claire.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Paige reached for the veil.
I turned toward her.
“Take it off.”
She hesitated.
Then unclasped the pearl comb.
The lace slipped down her shoulders.
For a moment, she held it awkwardly.
Then she placed it on a nearby chair.
I stepped forward.
Lifted it carefully.
And folded it over my arms.
The fabric was warm from her skin.
That hurt more than I expected.
My grandmother had worn this veil when she married the man she loved.
My mother had worn it when she married my father.
And now Paige had used it as a joke.
I looked at Evan one final time.
“I hope whatever you planned was worth losing me.”
Then I walked out.
Rebecca followed.

Behind us, Evan shouted my name.
I didn't turn around.
