Chapter 11 - THE BETRAYAL THAT REACHED MY OWN FAMILY

The investigation continued.

Daniel Price was suspended from his advisory role.

Independent auditors reviewed the proposed transactions.

Several board members were questioned.

Then Margaret called with news I hadn't expected.

“Claire, there's another name.”

I closed my eyes.

“Who?”

“Your uncle, Thomas Whitmore.”

I went still.

Thomas was my mother's younger brother.

He had always resented the trust.

He believed my grandmother should have divided the properties among her children rather than placing them under independent stewardship.

Margaret continued.

“Thomas appears to have supported the proposed restructuring.”

I stared at the wall.

“Why?”

“Because it could have created an opportunity for him to gain influence over certain assets.”

I sat down.

For years, Thomas had told me I was too young to manage the trust.

Too emotional.

Too sentimental.

Now I understood.

He hadn't wanted to help me.

He'd wanted control.
