Chapter 2 - THE RECORDING AT BELLWEATHER LAKE

Three weeks earlier, I'd sat on the floor of my grandmother's study watching Evan kiss Paige on a security recording.
The timestamp read 11:13 p.m.
I replayed it three times.
Then I called Rebecca.
She arrived forty minutes later wearing jeans and a sweatshirt.
I didn't cry when I showed her the video.
I simply pressed play.
She watched.
Then watched again.
When it ended, she looked at me.
“Claire.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
Rebecca swallowed.
“Please tell me you're canceling the wedding.”
“I am.”
She exhaled.
“Thank God.”
“But not yet.”
Rebecca frowned.
“What?”
I pointed toward the screen.
“Listen to what Evan says before he kisses her.”
She leaned closer.
The recording played again.
The voting shares transfer into the marriage vehicle.
Rebecca went still.
“Claire.”
I nodded.
“He's not just cheating.”
She looked at me.
“He's trying to take control of the trust.”
I stared at the screen.
My grandmother had spent sixty years building the Whitmore Cultural Trust.
Historic properties.
A publishing imprint.
Scholarships for students who couldn't afford college.
And Bellweather Lake.
The house where my mother learned to swim.
Where my grandmother taught me to bake.
Where three generations of women had celebrated birthdays, Christmases, and ordinary Sunday afternoons.

Evan wanted it.
And he was willing to marry me to get it.
