Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO THOUGHT SHE HAD WON

Paige called three days after the canceled wedding.

I almost didn't answer.

Then curiosity won.

“Claire.”

Her voice was soft.

Almost apologetic.

“I think we should talk.”

I sat beside my kitchen window.

“About what?”

“The rehearsal dinner.”

I laughed.

She hesitated.

“Look, things got out of hand.”

“Did they?”

“I never meant to hurt you.”

I stared at the rain.

“You wore my grandmother's wedding veil.”

Silence.

Then Paige sighed.

“Claire, it was just a joke.”

I closed my eyes.

Four years of friendship.

Birthdays.

Vacations.

Late-night conversations.

And she still thought the word joke could erase everything.

“Paige.”

“Yes?”

“Did you know Evan planned to use our marriage to gain influence over the trust?”

Silence.

Then she whispered, “I don't know what you're talking about.”

I nodded.

“That's what I thought.”

I ended the call.

Then blocked her number.
