Chapter 12 - THE HEARING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The trust's special hearing took place three months after the canceled wedding.
Independent trustees attended.
Attorneys presented evidence.
Auditors explained the proposed restructuring.
And I sat at the center of the conference table wearing a navy suit.
Not a wedding dress.
Not a veil.
A suit.
The meeting lasted nearly six hours.
By the end, the trustees had voted to reject the proposed agreements.
Daniel Price's advisory contract was terminated.
Thomas Whitmore was removed from several committee positions following findings of misconduct.
The trust referred evidence of possible fraud and document tampering to appropriate authorities.
Evan's proposed marriage vehicle never came into existence.
The lake house remained protected.
So did the scholarship fund.
The publishing imprint.
And the historic properties my grandmother had spent her life preserving.
When the meeting ended, Margaret squeezed my hand.
“You did it.”
I looked down.
Then smiled.
“No.”
May you like
I thought of my grandmother.
“We did.”
