Chapter 1 - THE PRICE OF HER FREEDOM

“How much of our cabin money did you give her?”

Owen stared at me.

His face had gone pale beneath the warm chandelier light.

Amelia stood beside the table, one hand resting on the back of her chair.

Nobody spoke.

Outside, snow continued falling over Lake Mendota.

“Owen,” I repeated. “How much?”

He swallowed.

“Claire, this isn't the place.”

I looked around the private dining room.

The roses I'd chosen.

The champagne I'd ordered.

The lemon cake with sugared violets.

My anniversary.

My marriage.

My humiliation.

“It's exactly the place.”

Owen rubbed his forehead.

“Twenty thousand.”

I stared at him.

“Twenty thousand dollars?”

He nodded.

“It was a loan.”

Amelia looked away.

Something about that movement made my stomach tighten.

I turned toward her.

“Was it a loan?”

She hesitated.

“Claire—”

“Was it?”

Her expression changed.

Then she whispered:

“He told me I didn't have to repay it.”

The room went completely still.

I looked back at Owen.

He closed his eyes.

And that was when I understood.

He hadn't simply helped another woman.

He had given away money we'd saved together.

Money from my emergency department shifts.

Money from holidays I worked while other families gathered around dinner tables.

Money from vacations we postponed.

Money from a dream we'd built over seven years.

And he had done it without asking me.

I looked at the cake.

Congratulations on your freedom, Amelia.

Then I laughed.

One sharp, broken sound.

Owen stepped closer.

“Claire.”

I moved away.

“Don't touch me.”

He stopped.

I picked up my purse.

Then looked at Amelia.

“Congratulations.”

Her eyes widened.

“Claire—”

“On your freedom.”

I looked at my husband.

“Apparently, it cost me twenty thousand dollars.”

May you like

Then I walked out.

And for the first time in seven years, I didn't wait for Owen to follow.
