Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING I NEVER EXPECTED

Two years after the rehearsal dinner, Gabriel proposed.
Not at a gala.
Not in front of hundreds of people.
But at Bellweather Lake.
We were sitting on the dock at sunset.
The water shimmered.
The air smelled of pine.
Gabriel took my hand.
“Claire.”
I looked at him.
“Yes?”
He smiled nervously.
“I've been trying to find the perfect moment.”
I laughed.
“Have you?”
He nodded.
“And I realized there probably isn't one.”
Then he reached into his pocket.
My heart stopped.
He opened a small velvet box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
Beautiful.
Understated.
Perfect.
Gabriel looked at me.
“I love you.”
My eyes filled.
“I love the way you protect the people and places that matter to you.”
He swallowed.
“And I love that you never stopped believing in kindness, even after people gave you reasons to doubt it.”
Tears streamed down my cheeks.
He smiled.
“Will you marry me?”
I laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
May you like
Then kissed me.
And the lake shimmered around us.
