Chapter 1 - THE VEIL THAT WASN'T HERS

“When does she sign?”
That was the question that destroyed my engagement.
Not the kiss.
Not Paige Sutton sitting on my grandmother's kitchen counter with her arms around my fiancé.
Not even Evan Carlisle telling her that the lake house would eventually belong to them.
It was that question.
Because it meant they weren't simply betraying me.
They were planning something.
Something involving my family's money.
My grandmother's legacy.
And documents I was supposed to sign after the wedding.
For three weeks, I pretended I knew nothing.
I smiled through cake tastings.
Approved floral arrangements.
Answered questions about seating charts.
And listened to Evan tell me how excited he was to become my husband.
All while my attorney investigated what he had planned.
Now, standing in the ballroom at Halston House, watching Paige wear my grandmother's veil, I realized they had become careless.
They thought I'd already lost.
“Claire.”
Evan's voice pulled me back.
He stood beside the champagne tower.
His expression was tight.
“Can we discuss this privately?”
I looked at him.
Then at Paige.
Then at Caroline Carlisle, who was still holding the delicate lace as though Paige were the bride.
“No.”
Evan blinked.
“What?”
“We're not discussing anything privately.”
A murmur passed through the room.
Paige laughed nervously.
“Claire, you're making everyone uncomfortable.”
I smiled.
“Good.”
Her expression changed.
I turned toward my cousin Rebecca.
She was already reaching into her handbag.
The envelope was cream-colored.
My attorney had prepared it that morning.
Rebecca crossed the ballroom and placed it in my hand.
Evan stared.
“What is that?”
I looked at him.
May you like
“Something you should have read before trying to steal from me.”
The room went silent.
