Chapter 10 - THE STRANGER WHO KNEW MY GRANDMOTHER

I met Gabriel Lancaster at a foundation meeting two weeks later.

He was forty-one.

Tall.

Quiet.

With dark hair and an expression that suggested he listened more than he spoke.

Gabriel ran a philanthropic investment group that supported historic preservation projects.

He had worked with my grandmother years earlier.

When he approached me after the meeting, he smiled.

“Claire Whitmore?”

I nodded.

“That's me.”

He held out his hand.

“Gabriel Lancaster.”

I shook it.

“I know your name.”

He smiled.

“Your grandmother used to call me the most stubborn young man in Chicago.”

I laughed.

“That sounds like her.”

Gabriel looked toward the conference room.

“I heard about the trouble with the trust.”

My smile faded.

He continued.

“Ruth would have wanted you to protect it.”

I swallowed.

“I'm trying.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Then he handed me a folder.

Inside were copies of correspondence between my grandmother and his organization.

Several letters discussed the trust's long-term independence.

I stared.

“Why are you giving me these?”

Gabriel smiled faintly.

“Because your grandmother once helped me when I needed someone to believe in me.”

May you like

He looked at the folder.

“And I think it's time I returned the favor.”
