Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE RIVER TERMINAL WENT DARK

The attack came at eleven forty-three.

Evelyn was at the Mercer Freight terminal with her attorney and two independent auditors.

They were reviewing records.

Then the lights went out.

Emergency generators failed.

The building fell into darkness.

A security alarm sounded.

Evelyn's heart stopped.

“What's happening?”

Her attorney grabbed her arm.

“Stay close.”

Footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Someone shouted.

Then a door slammed.

Evelyn pulled out her phone.

Called Cole.

He answered immediately.

“Evelyn?”

Her voice trembled.

“The power's out.”

“Where are you?”

“Terminal Three.”

Silence.

Then Cole's voice hardened.

“Get to the nearest secure exit. I'm calling emergency services.”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Someone's here.”

Cole paused.

“Stay on the line.”

She heard footsteps approaching.

Then a man's voice.

“Miss Mercer?”

Evelyn froze.

The voice was familiar.

Her father's operations manager.

Thomas Reed.

She stepped backward.

“Thomas?”

He appeared in the doorway holding a flashlight.

His face was pale.

“Come with me.”

Evelyn stared.

“Why?”

May you like

Thomas swallowed.

“Because your father told me to make sure you never found the rest of the files.”
