Chapter 14 - A PROPOSAL WITHOUT A PRICE

Three years later, Cole proposed.

Not in a ballroom.

Not in front of two hundred guests.

Not with a contract.

He proposed at the riverfront park where Evelyn had spent countless evenings rebuilding her life.

They walked beside the water.

The city lights shimmered.

Cole stopped.

“Evelyn.”

She looked up.

“Yes?”

He smiled nervously.

“I've been trying to find the right words.”

She laughed.

“That's unusual for you.”

He grinned.

“I know.”

Then he lowered himself onto one knee.

Evelyn froze.

Cole opened a small velvet box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

“Evelyn Mercer.”

Her eyes filled.

“The first time we met, you kissed me because you were trying to escape a future someone else had chosen for you.”

He swallowed.

“I never want to be another man who decides your life for you.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Cole continued.

“I love you.”

“I respect you.”

“And I want to build a life with you, if that's what you want too.”

Evelyn laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Cole's eyes widened.

“Really?”

She nodded.

“Yes, Cole.”

He stood.

She threw her arms around him.

And kissed him.

This time, not to escape.

Not to make someone jealous.

May you like

Not to destroy an engagement.

But because she loved him.
