Chapter 2 - THE MAN BEHIND THE GRAY EYES

Cole Maddox had not come to the Marlowe Hotel for champagne.
He'd come for Grant Holloway.
Three weeks earlier, a shipment belonging to one of Cole's legitimate freight companies had disappeared near the Chicago River.
The cargo was insured.
The paperwork was clean.
But the truck had vanished.
Two days later, one of Cole's employees was found beaten behind a warehouse.
Before losing consciousness, the man whispered one name.
Holloway.
Cole began investigating.
He discovered unusual transactions connected to Mercer Freight.
False invoices.
Shell companies.
Cargo manifests that didn't match actual shipments.
And a series of payments routed through Holloway Holdings.
Then he learned Grant planned to marry Evelyn Mercer.
The daughter of the man who owned the terminals involved.
Cole had expected a business arrangement.
He hadn't expected the bride-to-be to kiss him in front of two hundred guests.
And he certainly hadn't expected her to beg him not to let anyone take her.
Now he stood beside her while Grant watched them both.
Evelyn looked up.
“Why are you here?”
Cole hesitated.
Then answered.
“Because Holloway has been moving things through your father's company that don't belong there.”
Her stomach tightened.
“What things?”
Cole looked toward Grant.
“That's what I intend to find out.”
Grant's face hardened.
“You're making accusations you can't prove.”
Cole smiled faintly.
“Not yet.”
Then he turned toward Evelyn.
“Would you like to leave?”
She stared.
“Just like that?”
“Yes.”
“What about my father?”
Cole's expression softened.
“We can talk about him somewhere quieter.”
Evelyn looked around the ballroom.
Her father's guests.
Grant's business partners.
The chandeliers.
The flowers.
The engagement party that had become a public disaster.
Then she looked at Cole.
“Will you take me somewhere safe?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
May you like
She swallowed.
“Then let's go.”
