Chapter 6 - THE MIDNIGHT MEETING AT PIER SEVENTEEN

Evelyn's mother had died seven years earlier.
A boating accident.
That's what the police report said.
She'd fallen into the river during a storm.
Her body was found two days later.
Evelyn had been twenty-two.
She remembered the funeral.
The rain.
Her father's silence.
The way Grant Holloway had appeared at the service even though nobody remembered inviting him.
Now she stood beside Cole at Pier Seventeen.
The wind smelled of river water and diesel.
“Why are we here?” she asked.
Cole looked toward the warehouses.
“Because your mother was investigating something before she died.”
Evelyn stared.
“How do you know?”
He hesitated.
Then said, “She contacted my father.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Your father?”
Cole nodded.
“He ran a competing shipping company.”
Evelyn swallowed.
“What did she want?”
“Protection.”
Silence.
Cole continued.
“She believed someone was using Mercer Freight to move illegal cargo.”
Evelyn stared at the dark water.
“And then she died.”
Cole nodded.
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“Do you think she was murdered?”
Cole's expression hardened.
“I think we need evidence before we answer that.”
Then headlights appeared at the far end of the pier.
A black SUV.
Moving slowly.
Cole's hand settled near Evelyn's elbow.
“Stay behind me.”
She looked up.
“Who is that?”
May you like
Cole's expression changed.
“Someone who wasn't supposed to know we were here.”
