Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED AWAY FROM BOTH MEN

Evelyn didn't immediately begin a relationship with Cole.

She needed time.

To grieve her mother.

To process her father's betrayal.

To rebuild Mercer Freight.

And to understand who she was without someone else deciding her future.

Cole respected that.

He didn't pressure her.

Didn't send extravagant gifts.

Didn't demand promises.

He simply stayed available when she wanted to talk.

Meanwhile, Evelyn worked with independent investors and attorneys to restructure the company.

The fraudulent agreements were challenged.

Some debts were renegotiated.

Others had to be paid.

The business survived.

Not unchanged.

But stronger.

Evelyn became its chief executive.

She introduced new oversight.

Improved worker protections.

And created a scholarship fund in her mother's name.

One evening, she stood on the riverfront watching the lights reflect on the water.

Her phone rang.

Cole.

She smiled.

“Hello?”

“Evelyn.”

“Yes?”

“Would you like to have dinner?”

She looked toward the city.

Then laughed softly.

“Are you asking me on a date?”

Cole hesitated.

“Yes.”

May you like

She smiled.

“Then yes.”
