Chapter 10 - THE PRICE OF COLE MADDOX'S PROTECTION

Thomas Reed was arrested that night.
Police arrived before he could force Evelyn to leave the building.
Investigators discovered that he'd been involved in falsifying shipping records.
He also possessed documents linking Holloway Holdings to illegal cargo movements.
Evelyn was shaken.
But alive.
Cole arrived at the terminal shortly afterward.
He found her sitting in an ambulance.
A blanket wrapped around her shoulders.
She looked up.
“Cole.”
He stopped.
For a moment, his expression changed.
Fear.
Relief.
Something deeper.
He approached slowly.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
He closed his eyes.
Then nodded.
“Good.”
Evelyn studied him.
“You were scared.”
Cole looked at her.
“Yes.”
She swallowed.
“Why?”
He hesitated.
Then said, “Because I care about you.”
Her heart skipped.
Silence.
Then Evelyn whispered, “You barely know me.”
Cole smiled faintly.
“I know.”
She looked down.
He continued.
“And I know this isn't the time to ask for anything.”
