Chapter 8 - THE ENEMY WHO KNEW HER MOTHER'S NAME

Cole arrived within the hour.

He examined the photograph.

His expression hardened.

“Where did you find this?”

Evelyn pointed toward the frame.

“Behind it.”

Cole nodded.

Then looked at the writing.

“Do you recognize the handwriting?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

“My mother's.”

Silence.

Cole looked toward the window.

Then said, “We need to preserve this.”

Evelyn nodded.

They gave the photograph to the attorney.

That evening, Cole received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Still digging, Maddox?”

Grant Holloway.

Cole's expression hardened.

“What do you want?”

Grant laughed softly.

“You're making a mistake.”

Cole looked toward Evelyn.

“That's becoming a popular opinion.”

Grant's voice sharpened.

“Stay away from Mercer Freight.”

Cole smiled faintly.

“Why?”

Silence.

Then Grant said, “Because Evelyn's mother learned what happens when people interfere.”

Cole went still.

“Are you threatening her?”

Grant laughed.

“I'm reminding you that history repeats itself.”

The call ended.

Cole stared at the phone.

Then turned toward Evelyn.

“We're going to the police.”
