Chapter 15 - THE KISS SHE CHOSE

Their wedding was held in a small garden overlooking the Chicago River.

There were sixty guests.

No political alliances.

No business negotiations.

No hidden contracts.

Just family.

Friends.

And people who had helped them rebuild their lives.

Evelyn wore a simple ivory gown.

A photograph of her mother rested beside the flowers.

Cole stood beneath an arch of white roses.

When Evelyn approached, his eyes filled.

She smiled.

“Don't cry.”

He laughed.

“Too late.”

They exchanged vows.

Cole promised to respect her choices.

Evelyn promised to tell him the truth even when it was difficult.

And when the officiant pronounced them husband and wife, Cole kissed her gently.

### FIVE YEARS LATER

The Maddox home was filled with morning sunlight.

Evelyn stood at the kitchen counter reviewing shipping reports.

Her four-year-old daughter, Grace, sat at the table coloring.

Their two-year-old son, Oliver, was attempting to feed cereal to the family dog.

Cole entered carrying coffee.

He kissed Evelyn's cheek.

“Morning.”

She smiled.

“Morning.”

He glanced at the reports.

“Still running the city?”

She laughed.

“Just the freight company.”

Cole grinned.

“That's what you said last week.”

Grace looked up.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, princess?”

“How did you meet Mommy?”

Cole smiled.

He looked at Evelyn.

Then answered.

“She kissed me.”

Grace gasped.

“First?”

Evelyn burst out laughing.

Cole nodded solemnly.

“Very first.”

Grace frowned.

“Why?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Because I was trying to be brave.”

Grace considered that.

Then asked, “Did it work?”

Cole looked at his wife.

His eyes softened.

“Yes.”

He kissed Evelyn's forehead.

“It worked.”

Evelyn leaned against him.

For a moment, she remembered the ballroom.

The chandelier.

Grant's shattered champagne glass.

The stranger with gray eyes.

And the desperate kiss that had changed everything.

She no longer felt fear when she remembered it.

Only gratitude.

Not because Cole had rescued her.

But because she'd finally found the courage to choose her own life.

Outside, sunlight spread across the garden.

Inside, Grace laughed.

Oliver spilled cereal.

And Evelyn Maddox, once the woman who kissed a stranger to escape a forced engagement, finally understood something.

The greatest love story wasn't the one that saved her.

It was the one she freely chose.
