Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE COLLATERAL

Evelyn called her father at eight the next morning.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
She closed her eyes.
“Somewhere safe.”
“Grant says you humiliated him.”
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“Did he mention the contract?”
Silence.
Her heart tightened.
“Dad.”
He sighed.
“Evelyn, I was trying to protect the company.”
“You used me.”
“No.”
“You signed an agreement that punished me for refusing to marry him.”
Her father's voice broke.
“I had no choice.”
Evelyn stared at the wall.
Then whispered, “Neither did I.”
Silence.
She continued.
“Sixty-eight people work for Mercer Freight.”
“I know.”
“They deserve better than this.”
Her father began crying.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
For years, she'd protected him.
Excused his mistakes.
Covered for his bad decisions.
But now she understood.
Loving someone didn't mean allowing them to destroy her life.
“I'm going to fight the agreement,” she said.
Her father gasped.
“Evelyn—”
“And I'm going to find out what Grant has been moving through our terminals.”
Silence.
Then her father whispered something that made her blood run cold.
“Don't.”
Evelyn froze.
“Why?”
May you like
Her father's voice trembled.
“Because if you look too closely, you'll find out what happened to your mother.”
