Chapter 3 - SEVENTY-TWO HOURS TO LOSE EVERYTHING

The elevator descended in silence.

Evelyn stood beside Cole, clutching her silver purse.

She was still shaking.

Cole noticed.

“Are you cold?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

He didn't press.

When they reached the lobby, a black sedan waited outside.

A driver opened the rear door.

Evelyn stopped.

Cole looked at her.

“What?”

She swallowed.

“I don't know you.”

He nodded.

“That's true.”

“You could be worse than Grant.”

Cole studied her.

Then stepped back.

“You don't have to get in.”

She stared.

He continued.

“There's a taxi stand across the street. I can have the hotel arrange a car. Or you can call someone you trust.”

Evelyn looked at him.

For the first time, she understood something.

Grant had never offered her a choice.

Cole was.

She took a breath.

“Where would you take me?”

“A hotel with independent security.”

“Why?”

“Because Holloway may try to pressure you before the seventy-two hours expire.”

Evelyn looked down at her hands.

“My father will lose everything.”

Cole's expression hardened.

“Maybe.”

She looked up.

He continued.

“But that doesn't mean you have to marry a man who threatens you.”

Her eyes filled.

She whispered, “You don't understand.”

Cole looked at her.

“Then tell me.”

May you like

Evelyn stared at him.

And for the first time in four months, someone was asking what she wanted.
