Claire Dawson wasn't simply a maid.
Adrian discovered that two days later.
Marco brought him a background report.
Claire had worked as an administrative assistant at a private security firm.
Before that, she'd been employed by a legal records company.
Her husband had died three years earlier.
But the official circumstances were unclear.
Adrian studied the report.
“Why didn't she mention this?”
Marco shrugged.
“Maybe she wanted a fresh start.”
Adrian nodded.
“Maybe.”
That evening, he found Claire in the laundry room.
“Mrs. Dawson.”
She looked up.
“Mr. Vale.”
He closed the door behind him.
“I need to ask you something.”
Her expression tightened.
“Yes?”
“Why did you come to work here?”
She hesitated.
Then looked down.
“Because I needed the money.”
Adrian waited.
She swallowed.
“And because I thought this house might have answers.”
His expression changed.
“Answers to what?”
Claire looked up.
