Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT ADRIAN CHOSE HIS FAMILY
The threat against Claire and Lucy intensified.
An anonymous message arrived.
STOP DIGGING OR THE CHILD PAYS.
Adrian read it.
Then looked at Claire.
She was holding Lucy's hand.
The little girl looked frightened.
Adrian crouched.
“Lucy.”
She looked up.
“Yes?”
“Do you trust me?”
She considered.
Then nodded.
“Mostly.”
He almost smiled.
“Fair enough.”
She hugged Captain Buttons.
“Are we in trouble?”
Adrian shook his head.
“Some people are making bad choices.”
Lucy looked at Claire.
“Will Mommy be okay?”
Adrian swallowed.
Then answered carefully.
“We're going to do everything we can to keep you both safe.”
Claire looked at him.

She saw a man trying to protect a family he hadn't expected to care about.
