Chapter 1

"# HE SLAPPED HIS WIFE TO DEFEND HIS CHILDHOOD SWEETHEART—12 HOURS LATER, SHE VANISHED WITH THEIR DAUGHTER AND LEFT HIS FIRST LOVE SCREAMING
The moment Alexander Moretti slapped his wife across the face in a crowded Chicago restaurant, Evelyn knew their marriage was over. Twelve hours later, she was thousands of miles away with their two-year-old daughter, leaving forty-seven unanswered calls and a sealed letter behind. But when Alexander opened that letter, his childhood sweetheart was already screaming into his phone: “Alexander! Evelyn has ruined everything!”
For three years, Evelyn Bennett Moretti had been married to one of Chicago’s most powerful and feared men.
Alexander controlled businesses, commanded loyalty, and could silence a room with a single glance. He was accustomed to getting whatever he wanted.
And he believed his wife would never leave him.
Evelyn had given him every reason to think so.
She had swallowed countless disappointments, overlooked his coldness, and endured the constant presence of another woman.
Not because she lacked courage.
Because she loved their daughter, Lily.
At two years old, Lily was the center of Evelyn’s world. She wanted her little girl to grow up with both parents, even if maintaining that family meant sacrificing her own happiness.
But Sophia Reynolds made that sacrifice harder every day.
Sophia was Alexander’s childhood sweetheart, a woman who behaved as though his marriage had never changed her place in his life.
When Sophia called, Alexander answered.
When she cried, he appeared.
And whenever Evelyn objected, her husband dismissed her concerns.
“Sophia has been part of my life since childhood,” he would say. “Stop making everything complicated.”
Evelyn tried to believe patience would eventually make him understand.
Then came the dinner that destroyed everything.
They were sitting inside an elegant downtown Chicago restaurant, surrounded by glowing chandeliers and beautifully dressed guests, when Sophia unexpectedly approached their table.
She made herself comfortable, interrupting their evening with remarks that grew increasingly insulting.
Evelyn finally spoke.
“I’m tired of you treating me like I don’t belong in my own marriage.”
Sophia turned toward Alexander, visibly offended.
His expression darkened.
“Apologize to Sophia.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“For what? Defending myself?”
“I said apologize.”
“No, Alexander.”
His hand moved before she could react.
The sharp slap echoed across the restaurant.
Evelyn’s face turned sideways. Her cheek burned, and she tasted blood.
Nearby diners froze.
Sophia stood beside Alexander, barely concealing her satisfaction.
But the most painful part wasn't the slap.
It was Alexander’s next sentence.
“You brought this on yourself.”
Evelyn looked at the man she had loved for three years.
And something inside her finally broke free.
She didn't scream. She didn't plead.
She simply collected her purse and walked away.
Alexander assumed she would return once she calmed down.
He was wrong.
That night, Evelyn quietly packed Lily’s clothes, gathered their essential documents, and prepared to leave Chicago.
Before sunrise, she carried her sleeping daughter out of the house.
On Alexander’s desk, she left one sealed envelope.
Inside, the message was unmistakable.
“Alexander,
By the time you read this, Lily and I will be gone.
For three years, I waited for you to choose your wife over Sophia.
Last night, you made your choice.
Now I’m making mine.
I want a divorce.
You always believed I was too gentle to leave.
You were wrong.
And before leaving, I prepared one final gift.
Not for you.
For Sophia.
After everything you’ve protected her from, it’s time she faces something you cannot fix.
Goodbye,
Evelyn.”
Alexander read the letter twice, his hands trembling.
He rushed upstairs.
Lily’s bedroom was empty.
Evelyn’s clothes were gone.
Then his phone rang.
Sophia.
“Alexander!” she screamed. “You have to come immediately!”
“What happened?”
“It’s Evelyn! She’s ruined everything! Please, you have to save me!”
Alexander slowly looked back at the letter.
One final gift.
For the first time, he had no idea what his wife had done.
And thousands of miles away, Evelyn kissed her sleeping daughter as their plane climbed into the morning sky.

Alexander had mistaken her silence for surrender.
He was about to discover how wrong he had been.
