Chapter 1 - THE MESSAGE BENEATH THE SWISS CONTRACT

She won't find out. Claire trusts me completely. By the time the two years are over, everything will be settled.
I read Lucas's message three times.
Then I noticed the next one.
Melanie had written:
And what about the house?
Lucas replied:
She'll keep paying the mortgage. She thinks I'm saving for our future.
I stopped breathing.
Our house.
The four-bedroom home in Cherry Creek that we'd bought after our wedding.
The home where I'd painted the nursery pale yellow because Lucas once said he wanted children.
The home where I'd spent six years believing we were building something together.
He planned to leave me there.
Waiting.
Paying.
Believing.
While he lived with another woman in California.
I scrolled farther.
Then I found something worse.
A document titled:
Walker Family Asset Transition Plan.
My stomach tightened.
I opened it.
The first page contained a timeline.
Month One: Lucas relocates.
Month Three: Claire assumes full household expenses.
Month Six: Refinance primary residence.
Month Nine: Transfer investment accounts.
Month Twelve: Finalize separation strategy.
I stared at the screen.
Separation strategy.
My hands began shaking.
Lucas wasn't simply planning an affair.
He was planning the financial destruction of our marriage.
Upstairs, the shower stopped.
I froze.
For a moment, I considered confronting him.
Marching upstairs.
Holding the laptop in front of his face.
Demanding answers.
But then I looked at the final page.
A name appeared beneath the financial projections.
Prepared by: Daniel Pierce, Financial Consultant.
I knew Daniel.
He had handled several of our investments.
He had attended our wedding.
He had once told me Lucas was lucky to have a wife like me.
I stared at his name.
Then I made a decision.
I photographed the documents with my phone, preserving the visible dates and filenames.
I didn't know whether the records would be admissible or complete, but I knew enough to ask a lawyer.
Then I closed the laptop.
Returned the charging cable to its drawer.
And walked upstairs.
Lucas emerged from the bathroom wearing a towel.
He smiled.
“Find what you needed?”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He kissed my forehead.
“Good.”
I smiled back.
And in that moment, I understood something.

My husband thought I was still the woman who believed every word he said.
He had no idea that I'd already begun planning a future without him.
