Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO RUN
Adrian offered Claire and Lucy a safe apartment outside Chicago.
Claire refused.
“I won't disappear again.”
Adrian looked at her.
“This isn't safe.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“Then why stay?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because my husband died trying to expose something.”
Adrian said nothing.
“And because Lucy deserves to grow up knowing that the truth matters.”
He studied her.
“You have a daughter to protect.”
Claire's expression hardened.
“I know that better than anyone.”
Silence.
Then she continued.
“But protecting her doesn't mean pretending dangerous people don't exist.”
