Chapter 1 - THE DOOR HE CHOSE TO OPEN

Ronan looked back at me from the doorway.
His face showed irritation before concern.
That hurt more than if he'd looked cruel.
“Mara, don't start making threats.”
I stood beside the kitchen island, barefoot and cold.
“I'm not threatening you.”
“Then what are you doing?”
I looked at the clock.
2:43 a.m.
“Giving you a choice.”
He sighed.
“I'm going to help someone who's sick.”
“Then go.”
For a moment, he looked surprised.
Perhaps he'd expected me to cry.
To beg.
To grab his arm.
Instead, I stepped aside.
Ronan hesitated.
Then said the sentence that ended our marriage.
“When I get back, I expect you to have calmed down.”
I nodded.
“Of course.”
He walked out.
The door closed.
I stood still for almost a minute.
Then I picked up my phone.
Opened my contacts.
And called my attorney.
She answered on the fourth ring.
“Mara?”
“Rebecca.”
A pause.
“What's wrong?”
I looked toward the door.
“It's time.”
Her voice changed.
“Are you sure?”
I closed my eyes.
For eighteen months, I'd been asking myself that question.

Tonight, I finally knew the answer.
“Yes.”
