Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER WHO BROKE THE RULES

The next morning, Vincent introduced me to Dominic Moretti.
He was younger.
Sharper.
Restless.
He looked at me with obvious irritation.
“So you're Rowan.”
I crossed my arms.
“Apparently.”
Vincent stood beside the fireplace.
“Explain the letter.”
Dominic looked away.
“It was supposed to scare her.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
He shrugged.
“David disappeared.”
I stared.
“And that makes it my fault?”
Dominic said nothing.
Vincent's expression hardened.
“You sent collectors to her apartment.”
Dominic looked at him.
“I needed leverage.”
Vincent stepped closer.
“You assaulted an innocent woman to get it?”
Dominic swallowed.
“I didn't tell them to touch her.”
Vincent's voice dropped.
“You were responsible for what they did.”
Dominic looked at me.
For a moment, his expression changed.
Then he said quietly, “I'm sorry.”
I stared.
The apology didn't erase the bruises.
Or the fear.
But I nodded.
“Don't do it to anyone else.”
Vincent turned toward Enzo.
“Make sure the men involved are identified and the evidence is preserved for the authorities.”
Dominic stared.
“You're going to report this?”
Vincent looked at him.
“Yes.”

For the first time, I realized Vincent Moretti wasn't the man the rumors described.
Or perhaps he was trying not to be anymore.
