Chapter 8 - THE MAN BEHIND THE SECOND DRAWER
Alessandro confronted Marco in the mansion's private office.
Marco arrived smiling.
“Cousin.”
Alessandro didn't return the smile.
“Sit.”
Marco frowned.
“What's wrong?”
Alessandro placed the ledger on the desk.
Marco's expression changed.
“Where did you get that?”
Alessandro leaned forward.
“Sarah.”
Marco swallowed.
Alessandro continued.
“Eighteen million dollars.”
Silence.
“Valyria.”
Marco looked away.
“And a child who may be yours.”
Marco's face went pale.
Alessandro stood.
“Tell me everything.”
Marco laughed nervously.
“You don't understand.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Then explain.”
Marco's voice broke.
“Aldo planned it.”
Alessandro froze.
“What?”
Marco swallowed.
“He wanted control of the legitimate businesses.”
“And Sarah?”
Marco looked down.
“She was supposed to take the blame.”
For a long moment, Alessandro couldn't move.
Then he whispered:
“You used my wife.”
Marco said nothing.
Alessandro closed his eyes.

And for the first time, he understood that Sarah hadn't simply left him.
She had escaped something far more dangerous.
