Chapter 3 - THE GRAY ACCOUNT BOOK

Alessandro discovered the gray account book at 1:18 a.m.
He had spent hours drinking whiskey in his library, furious that Sarah hadn't returned.
Valyria had gone upstairs.
His relatives had left.
The mansion was silent.
Then he opened the second drawer of his desk.
Behind the old telephone directories lay a folded linen napkin.
Inside it was a small gray ledger.
He frowned.
Sarah's handwriting covered the first page.
MORETTI FAMILY TRUST — PRIVATE TRANSACTIONS
Alessandro turned the page.
Dates.
Amounts.
Account numbers.
Names.
His expression hardened.
He recognized several transfers.
Then one caught his attention.
$2,800,000 — V. KI HOLDINGS
He stared.
Another entry.
$1,450,000 — MARCO MORETTI CONSULTING
Another.
$3,100,000 — ALDO MORETTI FAMILY OFFICE
His pulse quickened.
The figures continued.
Millions.
Moved quietly.
Repeatedly.
Without his authorization.
Then he reached the final page.
Sarah had written one sentence.
If you are reading this, Alessandro, it means you finally looked somewhere other than at yourself.
He stared at the words.
Then noticed the envelope tucked inside the back cover.
It contained a photograph.
Valyria.
Marco.
A hotel lobby.
Their hands intertwined.
And a date.
Six months earlier.

Alessandro's glass slipped from his fingers.
It shattered against the floor.
