Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT I STOPPED BEING HIS WIFE

The divorce hearing was scheduled for spring.

Owen tried to delay it.

He called.

Texted.

Sent flowers.

Wrote letters.

He apologized.

Promised therapy.

Promised transparency.

Promised everything he'd refused to give me while we were married.

I listened.

Then said no.

At the final settlement meeting, Rebecca presented the financial records.

Owen's attorney reviewed them.

The room was quiet.

Owen looked at me.

“Claire.”

I didn't answer.

He swallowed.

“I'm sorry.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

His eyes filled.

“Is there really nothing I can do?”

I looked at him.

Then whispered:

“You could have chosen me when it mattered.”

He closed his eyes.

May you like

And for the first time, I realized I didn't need him to understand.

I only needed to leave.
