Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE WITH THE RED DOOR

Three weeks after the anniversary, I drove to Vermont.
Alone.
I told the hospital I needed four days off.
Packed one suitcase.
And left Madison before sunrise.
I didn't know exactly why I was going.
Maybe because the dream had been mine before Owen turned it into something painful.
Maybe because I needed to see whether it still existed without him.
The cabin was near Stowe.
Small.
Cedar-sided.
With a red front door.
The same cabin we'd seen years earlier.
I had found it listed for sale online.
The owner was an older man named Thomas Bennett.
He met me outside.
“You must be Claire.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“Come in.”
The cabin smelled like pine and coffee.
Sunlight poured through the windows.
There was a stone fireplace.
A tiny kitchen.
And a porch overlooking snow-covered trees.
I stood in the living room.
My throat tightened.
Thomas noticed.
“You okay?”
I laughed softly.
“It's just…”
I looked around.
“It's exactly what I imagined.”
He smiled.
“Then maybe you're meant to be here.”
I shook my head.
“I can't afford it.”
Thomas studied me.
Then said:
“Sometimes people need a place before they know what they're going to do with it.”
I smiled sadly.
“Maybe.”
He handed me a business card.
“If you ever change your mind.”
I took it.
May you like
And for the first time, the idea of Vermont no longer felt like something Owen had stolen.
It felt like something I might still choose.
