Chapter 14 - THE LIFE BEYOND BETRAYAL

I moved to Vermont in September.

The leaves were beginning to turn.

The air smelled like pine.

The cabin needed repairs.

The porch boards creaked.

The kitchen faucet leaked.

And the heating system made a strange knocking sound.

But it was mine.

I found work at a regional hospital.

Made friends.

Joined a local book club.

And began spending Sunday mornings drinking coffee on the porch.

Daniel Mercer helped me replace the front steps.

He didn't ask for anything.

Didn't make grand promises.

Didn't try to impress me.

He simply showed up with tools.

And stayed until the work was done.

One evening, we sat on the porch watching the sunset.

He looked at me.

“Claire.”

I smiled.

“Yes?”

“Would you like to have dinner sometime?”

I laughed softly.

“We've had dinner three times.”

He smiled.

“I meant a date.”

My heart tightened.

I looked toward the trees.

Then back at him.

And for the first time in a long time, the thought of falling in love didn't feel like a threat.

May you like

I smiled.

“Yes.”
