Chapter 12 - THE WINTER EVERYTHING FELL APART

Owen lost Amelia.
Not because I fought for him.
Because the relationship couldn't survive the truth.
Once the financial records became part of the divorce proceedings, Amelia realized Owen had lied to both of us.
He had told her I was cold.
Distant.
Unloving.
He had told me Amelia was ancient history.
Neither version was true.
Eventually, Amelia left.
Owen called me afterward.
“Claire.”
I sighed.
“What?”
“She's gone.”
I closed my eyes.
“I'm sorry you're hurting.”
He swallowed.
“Can we start over?”
I looked toward the photograph of the Vermont cabin.
Then answered:
“No.”
Silence.
I continued.
“Owen, I don't want to be the person you return to because someone else walked away.”
He began crying.

I ended the call.
And felt nothing but relief.
