Chapter 2 - SIXTY-EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS

I didn't go home.
I drove to the hospital parking garage.
Parked beneath a flickering fluorescent light.
And opened our savings account.
My hands were shaking so badly that I entered the password incorrectly twice.
Then the balance appeared.
$11,842.19.
I stared.
That couldn't be right.
Seven years.
Sixty-eight thousand dollars.
Our Vermont account.
Our future.
I refreshed the page.
The number didn't change.
I opened the transaction history.
Transfers.
Withdrawals.
Payments.
Thousands of dollars moving out over eighteen months.
A law firm.
A moving company.
A luxury apartment complex.
A jewelry store.
My chest tightened.
Then I saw the final transfer.
$14,500 — Three days earlier.
I called Owen.
He answered immediately.
“Claire.”
I stared at the screen.
“Fifty-six thousand dollars.”
Silence.
I continued.
“You took fifty-six thousand dollars from our savings.”
His breathing changed.
“Claire, please come home.”
“Did you buy Amelia jewelry?”
A pause.
Then:
“It's complicated.”
I closed my eyes.
“Was the fourteen-thousand-dollar transfer for her?”
He didn't answer.
I looked toward the dark windshield.
Then whispered:
“I'm going to ask you one more time.”
Silence.
“Owen.”
His voice broke.
“Yes.”
Something inside me went quiet.
Not numb.
Not calm.
Just finished.
I ended the call.

Then opened my contacts.
And called a divorce attorney.
