Chapter 7 - THE HUSBAND WHO WANTED TWO LIVES

Owen came to the house carrying flowers.
White roses.
My favorite.
He stood on the porch looking exhausted.
“Claire.”
I opened the door but didn't invite him inside.
“What?”
He swallowed.
“Can we talk?”
I folded my arms.
“About what?”
“Our marriage.”
I looked at him.
Then laughed softly.
“You remembered we have one.”
His face tightened.
“Claire, please.”
I stared.
He continued.
“I made mistakes.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“But I love you.”
My throat tightened.
For a moment, the old reflex returned.
The part of me that wanted to believe him.
Then I remembered the cake.
The champagne.
The account balance.
The eighteen months.
I looked at him.
“Owen.”
“Yes?”
“Did you love me when you gave Amelia our money?”
He closed his eyes.
I continued.
“Did you love me when you lied about Thursdays?”
His voice broke.
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“Then your version of love isn't enough for me.”
He stared.
May you like
I stepped back.
Then closed the door.
