Chapter 5 - A WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN WAITING

Amelia called me on a Sunday afternoon.
I almost ignored the number.
Then answered.
“Hello?”
“Claire.”
Her voice was soft.
I closed my eyes.
“What do you want?”
She hesitated.
“I think we should talk.”
I laughed bitterly.
“About what?”
“Owen.”
I stared at the wall.
“Amelia, you can have him.”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“That's not what I wanted to say.”
I took a breath.
“Then say it.”
She hesitated.
“I didn't know about the cabin account.”
I looked down.
“Really?”
“No.”
I swallowed.
“Did you know he was married?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
She continued.
“But he told me your marriage was already over.”
My heart tightened.
I stared.
“What?”
Amelia's voice trembled.
“He said you were living separate lives.”
I laughed.
“We were sleeping in the same bed.”
Silence.
“He told me you didn't love him anymore.”
I looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“Did he tell you that while he was celebrating our anniversary?”
Amelia began crying.

I didn't comfort her.
For once, I let another woman carry the weight of her own choices.
