Chapter 8 - THE THREAT AGAINST LILY
Three weeks after Evelyn arrived in Portugal, she received an anonymous message.
It contained a photograph of Lily playing in the garden.
Beneath it were five words.
STOP TALKING ABOUT SOPHIA REYNOLDS.
Evelyn's blood turned cold.
She immediately contacted local police.
Then her attorney.
Rebecca helped move Lily inside.
The little girl looked confused.
“Mommy?”
Evelyn knelt.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Why can't I play?”
Evelyn forced a smile.
“Because we're going somewhere special.”
Lily brightened.
“Beach?”
Evelyn kissed her forehead.
“Maybe soon.”
That night, Evelyn moved with Lily and Rebecca to a secure temporary residence arranged through legitimate legal and protective channels.
She also informed investigators about the threat.
For the first time since leaving Chicago, Evelyn felt afraid.
But she didn't regret what she'd done.
