The divorce was finalized eleven months after Evelyn left Chicago.
Alexander signed the papers without contesting Evelyn's decision to end the marriage.
Their attorneys negotiated custody and parenting arrangements focused on Lily's safety and well-being.
Alexander agreed to supervised contact initially, with any changes subject to professional assessment and legal approval.
Evelyn continued living in Portugal.
She returned to work as an interior designer.
She rented a small studio.
And began building a life that belonged entirely to her.
One evening, Rebecca visited.
She found Evelyn painting a wall pale yellow.
Rebecca smiled.
“New color?”
Evelyn laughed.
“New beginning.”
Rebecca looked around.
The room was bright.
Warm.
Filled with plants and sketches.
It looked nothing like the cold mansion Evelyn had left behind.
Rebecca smiled.
“I like it.”
