Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO OWNED THE EVIDENCE

Evelyn had not acted impulsively.

For eight months, she'd been gathering evidence.

It began when she discovered a series of payments from one of Alexander's charitable foundations to a consulting company owned by Sophia Reynolds.

The payments were enormous.

The invoices were vague.

And the services supposedly provided didn't exist.

At first, Evelyn assumed it was a bookkeeping mistake.

Then she discovered more.

Sophia had been using the foundation's accounts to fund luxury purchases, private travel, and payments to several individuals with connections to questionable businesses.

The foundation was supposed to support children receiving medical treatment.

Evelyn had helped organize its fundraising events.

She had met the families.

Held their hands.

Listened to their stories.

And now she was discovering that money intended to help those children had been diverted.

She confronted Alexander privately.

He dismissed her.

“Sophia handles important projects.”

Evelyn showed him the invoices.

Alexander barely glanced at them.

“Stop looking for reasons to dislike her.”

That was the moment Evelyn understood something.

Alexander wasn't simply protecting Sophia.

He was refusing to see the truth.

So Evelyn contacted an independent attorney.

Then a forensic accountant.

Then the appropriate authorities.

She provided documents.

Bank records.

Invoices.

Emails.

And signed statements from former employees.

She didn't tell Alexander.

Because by then, she no longer trusted him to protect the investigation.
