A year later, Evelyn met Daniel Mercer.
He was an architect working on a community housing project.
They met at a design consultation.
Daniel was kind.
Patient.
And completely uninterested in Evelyn's former social status.
He didn't know who Alexander Moretti was.
At least, not at first.
When Evelyn eventually told him about her marriage, Daniel listened.
He didn't interrupt.
He didn't ask why she'd stayed.
He didn't suggest she should forgive Alexander.
He simply said, “I'm sorry you went through that.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“That's all?”
Daniel smiled gently.
“What else would you like me to say?”
She laughed.
For the first time in years, Evelyn realized she didn't have to defend her feelings.
Daniel didn't ask her to become someone else.
He didn't compete with her past.
And he never treated Lily as an inconvenience.
Their relationship developed slowly.
Carefully.
