Chapter 10 - THE MOTHER WHO WOULD NOT BE FRIGHTENED

Evelyn refused to disappear permanently.
She worked with investigators.
Provided testimony remotely where permitted.
And continued the divorce process through her attorney.
She also arranged counseling for herself.
Not because she was weak.
Because she wanted to heal.
One afternoon, Lily sat beside her on the sofa.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Where's Daddy?”
Evelyn swallowed.
“He's in Chicago.”
Lily frowned.
“Does Daddy love me?”
Evelyn's eyes filled.
She took her daughter's hands.
“Yes, baby.”
Lily looked down.
“Then why isn't he here?”
Evelyn kissed her forehead.
“Sometimes grown-ups make mistakes that take time to fix.”
Lily considered that.
Then wrapped her arms around Evelyn.
“I love you, Mommy.”
May you like
Evelyn held her tightly.
“I love you too.”
