Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT SOPHIA'S LIES COLLAPSED
Sophia was questioned by investigators.
Vincent DeLuca was arrested after evidence connected him to the attempted burglary and other criminal activities.
Alexander cooperated with the investigation.
He turned over records.
Accepted scrutiny of his businesses.
And ended several dangerous associations.
But none of it brought Claire home.
He called her attorney.
Requested updates about the pregnancy.
Sent medical expense payments through the appropriate channels.
And waited.
Sometimes, late at night, he walked through the empty mansion.
He stopped outside the nursery.
The room Claire had begun decorating before she left.
A white crib.
A small rocking chair.
Yellow curtains.
A stuffed elephant sitting on a shelf.
Alexander picked up the elephant.
Then sat in the rocking chair.
And cried.
May you like
Not because he had lost control.
Because he had finally understood what he'd failed to protect.
