Chapter 7 - THE DIVORCE PAPERS ON HIS DESK
Alexander received the divorce papers on a Thursday morning.
He was in his office when Tommy entered carrying a large envelope.
“Boss.”
Alexander looked up.
“What?”
Tommy placed the envelope on the desk.
“From Mrs. Moretti's attorney.”
Alexander opened it.
Then froze.
Petition for dissolution of marriage.
He read the words.
Again.
And again.
His hands began shaking.
He called his attorney immediately.
“Fix this.”
The attorney was silent.
Then said, “Alexander, divorce isn't something I can simply make disappear.”
Alexander stared.
“She doesn't mean it.”
The attorney hesitated.
“Her petition suggests otherwise.”
Alexander stood.
“I need to see her.”
“She's requested communication through counsel.”
Alexander's jaw tightened.
The attorney continued.
“If you want any chance of rebuilding trust, respect that boundary.”
Alexander looked toward the window.
For years, he'd believed Claire would always wait.
