Chapter 15 - THE HOME SHE CHOSE TO RETURN TO

Two years later, Alexander proposed again.
Not at the Moretti mansion.
Not at a gala.
Not in front of powerful men.
He proposed in the small garden behind my home.
Isabella was two.
She wore a yellow dress and carried a stuffed elephant.
Alexander knelt beside the flowerbed.
My heart stopped.
“Claire.”
I looked at him.
He smiled nervously.
“I know I asked you this once before.”
My eyes filled.
“And I know I broke the promises I made.”
He swallowed.
“But these last two years have taught me something.”
I waited.
He continued.
“Love isn't what I say when everything is easy.”
“It's what I do when someone needs me.”
He looked toward Isabella.
Then back at me.
“I can't undo the night I failed you.”
His eyes filled.
“But I can spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to wonder whether I'll come when you call.”
He opened a small velvet box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
“Claire Bennett.”
I started crying.
“Will you marry me again?”
I looked at him.
Then at Isabella.
Then back at the man who had spent two years proving he could change.
I smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
Alexander's face crumpled.
“Really?”
I nodded.
“Yes, Alexander.”
He stood.
I threw my arms around him.
Isabella clapped.
“Daddy!”
Alexander lifted her into his arms.
Then kissed my forehead.
And for the first time, I believed him.
Not because he promised.
Because he'd shown me.
### FIVE YEARS LATER
Our home was filled with morning sunlight.
Isabella, now seven, sat at the kitchen table drawing pictures.
Our three-year-old son, Gabriel, was building a tower from blocks.
Alexander entered carrying coffee.
He kissed my cheek.
“Morning.”
I smiled.
“Morning.”
He looked toward the children.
“Trouble?”
I laughed.
“Always.”
Isabella looked up.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Why do you always say Daddy comes when you call?”
Alexander went still.
I looked at him.
Then smiled.
“Because he learned something important.”
Isabella frowned.
“What?”
Alexander knelt beside her.
He smiled softly.
“That when someone you love needs you, you listen.”
Isabella nodded seriously.
“Even if you're busy?”
Alexander looked at me.
His eyes softened.
“Especially then.”
I leaned against him.
For a moment, I remembered the night everything fell apart.
The scraping lock.
The unanswered calls.
The hospital hallway.
Sophia's voice.
The wedding ring I'd left behind.
I'd once believed that losing Alexander meant losing my future.
Instead, leaving had given me the chance to build one.
And when love returned, it came differently.
Not as a demand.
Not as a promise without action.
May you like
But as a choice.
Made every day.
