Chapter 8 - THE EVIDENCE HIDDEN IN THE NECKLACE

The necklace Eleanor gave Sophia had belonged to Alexander's grandmother.
It was an heirloom.
A heavy gold chain with a small emerald pendant.
I recognized it immediately from photographs.
Alexander's grandmother had once told me she wanted it to remain in the family.
When Eleanor fastened it around Sophia's neck, I understood the message.
Sophia was being welcomed.
I was being replaced.
But the necklace had another history.
It had been stored in a family safe containing documents related to Moretti financial holdings.
When Alexander began investigating how Eleanor had accessed the safe, he discovered irregularities.
Several documents were missing.
A family trust had been modified.
And someone had attempted to transfer ownership interests through a series of shell companies.
Alexander confronted his mother.
She denied everything.
Then blamed me.
“Claire has turned you against your own family.”
May you like
Alexander stared.
For the first time, he didn't believe her.
