Chapter 7 - A HOUSE WITHOUT HIS NAME

The apartment wasn't luxurious.
There were no marble floors.
No chandeliers.
No armed guards standing outside my bedroom.
But there was a little balcony overlooking a tree-lined street.
A kitchen where I could cook without asking anyone's permission.
And a nursery with pale green walls.
I bought the crib myself.
Nathan helped assemble it.
We argued over the instructions.
Dropped two screws.
And laughed until my stomach hurt.
That night, I stood in the doorway looking at the finished crib.
My eyes filled.
Nathan appeared beside me.
“You okay?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“Then why are you crying?”
I laughed softly.
“Because it's mine.”
He looked around.
“The crib?”
I shook my head.
“The room.”
A pause.
“The choices.”
Nathan put an arm around my shoulders.
And I realized something.
May you like
I hadn't needed a mansion.
I'd needed a life where I could breathe.
