Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF HIS REGRET

Alexander began changing.
Not overnight.
Not dramatically.
He sought counseling.
Worked with attorneys to separate legitimate business interests from criminal operations.
Accepted that his actions had consequences.
And stopped trying to force Claire to return.
He sent updates about matters relevant to the divorce and pregnancy through Rebecca.
He attended appointments only when Claire invited him.
He respected boundaries.
And he stopped allowing his mother or Sophia to interfere.
One afternoon, he asked whether he could apologize in person.
I agreed.
We met in a quiet café.
Alexander looked exhausted.
“Claire.”
I nodded.
“Alexander.”
He swallowed.
“I was cruel.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He continued.
“I humiliated you.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
His eyes filled.
“And I hurt you.”
I looked down at my wrist.
The bruises had faded.
But I remembered.
Alexander whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
For a long moment, I said nothing.
Then I answered:
“Thank you for saying that.”
He looked up.
“Can you forgive me?”
I took a breath.
“Maybe someday.”
His eyes filled.
I continued.
“But forgiveness doesn't mean I'm coming back.”
Alexander nodded.
May you like
“I understand.”
And for the first time, I believed he might actually mean it.
