Chapter 6 - THE MAFIA BOSS WHO LOST CONTROL

Alexander arrived at my apartment building on a Thursday evening.
Two black SUVs.
Four security guards.
A driver.
And the unmistakable confidence of a man who had never been denied entry anywhere.
The concierge called upstairs.
“Ms. Bennett?”
I looked at Nathan.
He nodded.
“You don't have to see him.”
I took a breath.
“Tell Mr. Moretti he can contact my attorney.”
The concierge relayed the message.
A minute later, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Alexander.
“Claire.”
I closed my eyes.
“How did you get this number?”
“Please.”
His voice sounded different.
Tired.
Rough.
“I need to see you.”
I looked toward the window.
“No.”
A pause.
“Claire, you're carrying my child.”
I swallowed.
“Yes.”
“You can't just disappear.”
I felt something harden inside me.
“I didn't disappear, Alexander. I moved.”
Silence.
He continued.
“I want you home.”
I looked around the apartment.
The small kitchen.
The soft yellow lamp.
The folded baby clothes Nathan had bought.
Then I answered:
“I am home.”
May you like
Alexander said nothing.
For the first time in five years, he had no command that could change my mind.
